This listing is to purchase the Mythical Creatures: A Field Guide cross stitch pattern. This design was originally released as a stitchalong, and it is now available as a complete pattern. It is a richly coloured and beautiful guide to some of the mythical creatures you are most likely to meet in the wild. This field guide is designed as a companion piece to the Dragons: A Field Guide pattern, and also works great as a standalone piece.

You will receive two 41-page pattern booklet PDFs, one with colour patterns and one with black & white patterns (with colour backstitch). The booklets contain:
• Images of the completed piece
• Full pattern on one page, for screen use
• Full pattern over eight pages, for printing
• Complete thread key
• Close up patterns of every individual mythical creature, with specific thread keys for each dragon
• An introduction to the amazing world of mythical creatures and information on every creature you are stitching
You will also receive full cross stitch instructions.

The stitched area of the finished piece is: 201 stitches wide x 269 stitches high

On 14 count fabric this is approximately 14.4 x 19.2 inches or 36.5 x 48.8 cm
On 16 count fabric this is approximately 12.6 x 16.8 inches or 31.9 x 42.7 cm
On 18 count fabric this is approximately 11.2 x 14.9 inches or 28.4 x 37.9 cm

Other count fabrics can be used - just adjust the sizing accordingly.

These dimensions do not include the border of fabric you will need to leave around the design. I recommend you leave a further 2-3 inches all the way round (which means that you need to add 4-6 inches to your size measurements).

The pattern was model stitched on ‘Mythical Muse’ hand dyed fabric. This beautiful fabric was created especially for this stitchalong by Nichole Young of Afterglow Workshop in the United States. You can buy the fabric at https://www.etsy.com/shop/AfterglowWorkshop - it is available in 14, 16 and 18 count versions, all at sizes suitable for this stitchalong. The model was stitched on the 16 count version.

Alternatively you can use any fabric colour you like best - most mid-tones of any colour would be great for the stitchalong. However I would not recommend using the ‘Dragon’s Breath’ fabric created for Dragons: A Field Guide, as the cream and yellow colours are unlikely to show well on an orangey background.

It's best not to go for a fabric that’s too dark in case darker thread colours don’t show up. There are several areas of white and cream cross stitching, so ideally you should use fabric that will also show these pale colours well. If you are stitching on paler fabric, you may find these don’t show up well enough. If that is the case, you should easily be able to add backstitch around these areas.

55 thread colours are used in the design. You will need 2 skeins of DMC 310 (Black). About 80% of one skein of DMC 783 (Old gold) was used in the model stitch, so if you have a lower count fabric than the model, or stitch using more thread, you may also need two skeins on DMC 783. You will need one skein or less of all the other colours.

The pattern uses full cross stitches, fractional cross stitches (in relatively small numbers compared to the number of full cross stitches), a small amount of backstitch and a few French knots.

Skill level: Suitable for those with experience of cross stitch.

This listing is for PDFs of this pattern; it is not a completed piece nor a kit, so no fabric, thread or other materials are included. The charts are Instant Download so you can start stitching straight away!

Looking forward to this project

I started Mythical Creatures just two days ago, and already I’m so engaged that I have trouble putting it aside to do anything else!

Looking forward to discover the worlds of mythical creatures after taking a tour to spot dragons... I love the Phoenix and I am sure the rest of the creatures are cool too.
