The Rainbow Temperature Solar System cross stitch pattern booklets contain the charts and full instructions to cross stitch this piece in colours representing the maximum and minimum daily temperatures in your part of the world, through an entire year. The images show an example piece based on temperatures in Southampton, UK - the colour distribution in your piece will be different according to the temperatures in your area, so every piece stitched will be unique.

This is the version of the pattern for maximum AND minimum daily temperatures. For the simpler pattern version for maximum temperatures only, please click here.

Two separate versions are included, for leap years and non-leap years, so you can easily stitch for any year.

The pattern includes a complete set of colour schemes. The colour schemes are designed to be stitched on black fabric or dark fabric such as navy blue. The pattern is not designed to be stitched on white or pale fabric.

A full set of numbers and two complete alphabets are also included so that you can stitch any year number and location.

The pattern is based on our Solar System. It features the Sun, the eight planets, Pluto, the Asteroid Belt, and a comet. Each of these represent the temperatures of each day for one month of the year. There are backstitched orbital lines for each planet and Pluto, which are backstitched in the temperature colours for part of some of the months.

As well as the complete charts, the instruction booklets have a separate section for every month, giving instructions on how to stitch that month, as well as interesting information about the planet or body you are stitching. Realistic features are shown in the planets where possible, such as Jupiter's Great Red Spot and Pluto's 'heart'. The order of the months is:

January: Sun
February: Mercury and orbital lines
March: Venus and orbital lines
April: Earth and orbital lines
May: Mars and orbital lines
June: Asteroid Belt
July: Jupiter and orbital lines
August: Saturn and orbital lines
September: Uranus and orbital lines
October: Neptune and orbital lines
November: Pluto and orbital lines
December: Comet

Very comprehensive instructions are included, explaining exactly where to stitch for each day and how to adapt the extensive temperature colour ranges to almost anywhere in the world. You don't need to worry if you live in a hot or cold climate, or if the temperature goes between extremes - you will adapt the colours to your own temperature range, so that you will still stitch with colours across the rainbow palette. You can use either Fahrenheit or Celsius scales for your temperatures.

If you don't live in a major populated area you might want to check that your area is covered by temperature websites, unless you are recording temperatures yourself. I recommend looking at:
www.accuweather.com
www.wunderground.com
www.timeanddate.com
On AccuWeather, if you search for your location and click on “monthly”, it will give you temperatures for all the months of the current year and the year before. In the settings (top right of the website) you can change between Fahrenheit and Celsius. If you want to go further back than the previous year, perhaps to commemorate a special year, both Time and Date and Weather Underground give temperatures going much further back. Time and Date allows you to choose Fahrenheit or Celsius.

The stitched area of the finished piece (not including any margin) is: 144 stitches wide x 144 stitches high
On 14 count fabric this is approximately 10.3 x 10.3 inches or 26.1 x 26.1 cm
On 16 count fabric this is approximately 9.0 x 9.0 inches or 22.9 x 22.9 cm

If stitched on 14 count fabric the pattern fits in an 11 inch hoop, as shown in the pictures.

The design uses full cross stitches and backstitches. There are no fractional stitches or French knots.

The design is suitable for people with experience of cross stitch.
